The Sr. Manager, Health & Safety will be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of health, safety, environment systems across the organization, ensuring regulatory compliance, fostering a culture of safety and quality, and driving continuous improvement in HSE performance.
This role requires a seasoned Health & Safety professional with proven experience managing safety programs in high-risk environments, particularly within construction and transportation settings. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mitigating risks associated with heavy machinery, hazardous materials, working at heights, and active traffic zones to ensure the safety and compliance of all operations.
Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and support to HSE teams across all business units, promoting a culture of safety, environmental awareness, and quality excellence.
- Develop, maintain, and execute a risk management framework to proactively identify and mitigate HSE risks.
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify potential risks and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Engages with field operations and safety teams to devise and coach on standards and best practices for the management of high-risk equipment - hoists, booms, platforms
- Ensure compliance with all applicable health, safety, environmental, and quality regulations and standards - WorkSafe BC.
- Develop and implement key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor HSE performance.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of HSE incidents and near misses.
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures.
- Lead initiatives to drive continuous improvement in HSE processes and performance.
- Foster a continuous learning environment, promoting the development of HSE skills and knowledge across the organization.
- Oversee the development and delivery of HSE training programs to ensure all managers, project teams, and HSE personnel are knowledgeable and competent in relevant practices and procedures.
- Prepare regular reports on HSE performance for senior management, identifying trends, areas for improvement, and success stories.
- Work closely with Operations Managers to ensure there is confidence and understanding of the HSE regulations, company systems, and appropriate knowledge to manage project HSE personnel.
- Facilitate regular reviews and updates of HSE policies, procedures, and systems.
- Support the investigation and management of HSE incidents, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented.
Requirements:
- Proven experience in a senior management role with at least five years of leadership in health, safety, and environmental (HSE) settings.
- Exceptional leadership skills combined with outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities.
- A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Certification as a National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) or equivalent accreditation through a recognized training organization.
- Extensive knowledge of Provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation and how it applies in practice.
- Demonstrated success in building and maintaining relationships with industry leaders and key stakeholders, identifying their needs, and advocating on their behalf.
- Strong ability to analyze complex safety issues and develop effective solutions.
- Familiarity with reviewing engineered drawings, including detailed equipment and formwork schematics, to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Comprehensive understanding of relationship management principles and how to apply them in fostering organizational change.
- Additional safety certifications such as WHMIS, Confined Space or Fall Protection training are advantageous.
- Demonstrated expertise in creating and implementing HSE strategies that drive system improvements and cultural change initiatives.
Remuneration:
- $140,000 to $160,000
